Más de 150.000 personas recibieron este jueves al nuevo pontífice, el estadounidense con nacionalidad peruana Robert Francis Prevost, en la plaza de San Pedro, donde se reunieron en poco menos de una hora, desde que salió la fumata blanca hasta la presentación del pontífice al mundo.

Tras el humo blanco que a las 18.08 horas de hoy (16.08 GMT) informó al mundo de la elección de un nuevo papa, en la cuarta votación del cónclave, riadas de personas se dirigieron al unísono a la plaza vaticana, que estalló en júbilo y expectación con el repique de campanas que anunciaba la buena nueva.

«Desde el momento de la fumata blanca, en poco menos de una hora, una afluencia extraordinaria de más de 150.000 personas inundó toda la zona urbana que rodea el Vaticano, entrando en la plaza de San Pedro dentro de los límites de su capacidad», indicaron fuentes policiales.
